3 Tips for a Stylish and Relaxing Home

They say that home is where the heart is — surrounding yourself with a beautiful home will make you feel at ease and will help you relax. As a soon-to-be first-time homeowner, I’m looking forward to my move-in date – where for the first time I can move in to a space and make it completely my own. I’ve lived in three different rented spaces in the past four years, and I’m looking forward to being more firmly rooted somewhere.

As I decorate my new home, you can expect a slew of design and DIY posts to come out of it! For now, here are three simple tips for creating a stylish and relaxing home that you’ll want to spend time in.

1. Surround yourself with things you love

What colors, patterns, and momentos make you happy when you look at them? Put those things where you get to look at them often for a room you’ll love spending time in. What makes you happy in your environment is the ability to feast your eyes on your favorite color, a gorgeous fabric, a wedding china set, or that heirloom that your grandmother gave you that you love looking at. Don’t put special items away – find clever ways to incorporate them into the design of your room so that you can show them off.

2. Hone your own style instead of following trends

It’s easy to get caught up in what’s trendy or what will look good to other people, but you are ultimately the one who spends the most time in your home. If you are happy with it, that’s what counts the most.

Minimalism and clean lines may be the trend, but I love a room filled to the brim with a variety of textures, colors, and found items. A comment I often get on my décor is, “I never would’ve thought to mix those two items together.” The common thread between the often “mismatched” items in my room is that they are all things that I love. I love florals, leopard print, wood, corroded metal, turquoise blue, hot pink, jewel tones, and splashes of gold. I love rustic bohemian and glam Victorian, so I mix it all together until it forms a somewhat cohesive and very distinct style that is all my own.

3. Use plants to add life to your home

Plants bring the outside in and make a room come to life. Not to mention, they add a shade of green to your color scheme. Now, I tend to have a black thumb when it comes to plants, but here are a few varieties that I love that I’ve had success with:

    1. 1. Golden Pothos
    1. 2. Cactuses
    1. 3. Succulents
    1. 4. Angel Plant
    1. 5. Bonsai Tree

Things I Didn’t Know About Motherhood

Motherhood is an experience that is both challenging and rewarding. Despite having many friends who became mothers before me, and despite listening to them tell me about their experiences, there was absolutely nothing that could have prepared me for the reality of motherhood. There were parts that were way more difficult than I anticipated, but there are also parts that are so much better than I could ever have imagined.

On Weight Gain and Body Acceptance

Over the past few years, I’ve put on a lot of weight. It actually started with a medication that I had to take for bipolar disorder. One of the side effects was that I put on a few pounds. But it wasn’t until recently, when I got pregnant with my first child, that the weight really started to pile on. During my pregnancy, I was a bit overwhelmed at the rate at which I was gaining weight, and it was hard to prevent it from happening. I was constantly hungry, and as my pregnancy progressed, I replaced going to the gym with more leisurely walks because I was constantly winded and tired from my workouts.
